In 2025, acclaimed Philippine artist Joe Datuin will make his third appearance at the prestigious Florence Biennale, following his participations in the 2015 and 2017 editions. Born in 1956, Datuin is celebrated both as a visual artist and as a monumental sculptor, and was nominated in 2018 for the Order of National Artists of the Philippines—one of the country’s highest cultural honors.
For more than forty years, he has built a reputation for his distinctive geometric abstractionist paintings and striking metal sculptures, earning recognition far beyond his homeland. His accolades include the Grand Prize in the Sculpture Category at the 2008 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sport and Art Contest, awarded during the Beijing Olympics, and the 2009 Ani ng Dangal Award from the Philippine government.
Datuin’s creative journey has taken him across Asia, North America, and Europe, with his works featured in renowned international biennales and art festivals. In the Philippines, his monumental public sculptures grace prominent locations such as Rizal National Park in Manila and the Philippine House of Representatives in Quezon City.
Through his art, Datuin explores themes that bridge popular culture, pressing societal issues, tradition, environmental awareness, and the evolving role of technology—creating works that resonate on both personal and global levels.
