JOE DATUIN (b. May 7, 1956, Pangasinan, Philippines) is a World Renowned Filipino International Visual Olympian and Monumentalist and a nominee to the Order of the National Artists of the Philippines in 2018.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila in 1977 where he was bestowed the Benavides Award in 1977 and The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (TOTAL) Award in 2008, two of the university’s most prestigious recognitions in fine arts. He is also an alumnus of the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, USA, where he earned an Artist Residency grant in 2002.
In 2008, he brought immense pride to the nation by winning the Grand Prize from the International Olympic Committee’s Sport and Art Contest at Lausanne, Switzerland in the celebration of 2008 Beijing Olympics. With this extraordinary achievement, he was commissioned by the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) to create a monumental replica of his Olympic winning piece – the “DANCING RINGS” at the Rizal Park in Manila with other mosaic murals and sculptures (one is a flower clock). His winning was also recognized by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) through the Ani ng Dangal Award in 2009. He was also an Awardee for the Patnubay sa Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Eskultura Award by the City of Manila in 2010 and The Outstanding Filipino Award (TOFIL) by the Jaycees Senate in 2011.
His works have been shown in local and international venues in Asia, North America, and Europe in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Joe has also participated in major international art Biennales and Festivals such as the X and XI Florence Biennale ( in 2015 and 2016 ) at the Fortezza Da Basso, Florence, Italy and Anima Mundi Artfest at the Palazzo Ca’Zanardi, during the 57th Venice Biennalein Venice, Italy.
